Executive Director Medical Services - Chief Medical Officer

3-5 year contract

Part/Full time - hours negotiable 

The Eye and Ear hospital is located in East Melbourne, close to Melbourne's central business district. The hospital delivers more than half of Victoria’s public eye surgery and all of Victoria’s public cochlear implants. We have around 60 specialist clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provide a 24-hour emergency eye and ENT health service. Every year the Eye and Ear cares for over 200,000 patients, with nearly 150,000 outpatients, over 40,000 emergency patients and 15,000 inpatients. Cataract surgery is the most common surgery performed at the hospital.

The hospital has a strong culture of research, with more than 200 active research projects with our partners, including Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA), the University of Melbourne, the Bionics Institute, Bionic Vision Australia, HEARing CRC and Monash University.

The hospital is currently located across two sites while undergoing a major redevelopment project.

This position offers an exciting role for a registered medical practitioner with postgraduate qualifications in management (FRACMA, MBA or equivalent) and proven leadership experience in a healthcare environment.

The CMO will be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.

Key responsibilities include:

• Professional leadership and engagement of the medical workforce.

• Strategic and management advice to the Chief Executive Officer with a focus on the engagement of medical staff in the operations and strategic directions of the hospital.

• Professional governance oversight of all medical staff including appointment, credentialing, defining scope of clinical practice and professional development of senior medical staff and all facets of management of the junior medical workforce.

• Leadership of the Eye and Ear's clinical governance functions, including risk and quality programs, accreditation, medico-legal issues, oversight of the implementation and operational responsibility for the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and innovation in clinical models of care.

• In consultation with the CEO and other members of the Executive provision of high level strategic clinical advice as required by the Board, Executive and government departments and agencies including recommendations for continuing growth in the delivery of clinical services.

• Close liaison with key external stakeholders and research partners.
