Position Summary

Title: Advanced GP Registrar in Psychiatry

Department: Psychiatry

Classification: minimum PGY3 preferred but not essential
Salary: applicable to classification

Hours: up to 86 per fortnight depending on classification
Status: Full-time, fixed term, 12 month term.


This Advanced GP Psychiatry training course is accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM). The course is fulltime for 12 months.  You will work alongside trainees in psychiatry, in positions accredited by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), in a supportive multidisciplinary team environment.


GP Registrars are offered varied clinical opportunities and these can be tailored depending on the particular area of interest or skill deficit of each candidate.  Options at Bendigo Health in Psychiatry include:


  • Child and adolescent outpatient work (including Autism assessment);
  • Residential and outpatient youth work;
  • Inpatient, residential and outpatient adult work varying in focus from acute, through to recovery and rehabilitation;
  • Aged persons inpatient or outpatient work;
  • Primary Mental Health Team which sees patients with high prevalence disorders including depressive, anxiety and eating disorders, in order to support GPs in managing these patients
  • Regional and Rural settings

This post can contribute towards a Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM), a Fellowship of Advanced Rural General Practice (FARGP) or a post-Fellowship qualification.

There is emphasis on a practical, hands on approach to junior doctor training and we aim to foster excellent clinical exposure across a range of specialties. 

The new Bendigo Hospital opened in 2017 and delivers world-class treatment and care.  The new facilities include 372 inpatient beds, 72 same-day beds, 11 new operating theatres, a regional cancer center, and an 80-bed integrated psychiatry facility.

Selection Criteria
01.Must be successful in being accepted as an Australian GP Trainee Registrar and have enrolled with MCCC before applying

02.Minimum of PGY3 at commencement of training year preferred but not essential

03.Must hold General Registration with AHPRA prior to commencing employment

04.Demonstrated commitment to rural practice and rural communities

05.Demonstrated appropriate level experience and skills in the medical assessment and clinical management of patients

06.Thorough understanding of the relevant legislation pertaining to Medical Officers
