The 412-bed Northern Hospital (TNH) provides a broad range of medical, surgical, paediatric and obstetric services and includes a 18-bed ICU with over 1300 admissions per annum. TNH ICU is a Level II unit as described by The College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) Document IC-1 on ‘Minimum Standards for Intensive Care Units’. The Northern has the one of the busiest Emergency departments in Victoria with 70,000 attendances per annum. Approximately 75% of ICU admissions are from the Northern Emergency Department.

The Northern Intensive Care Training Scheme (NICTS) provides accredited training suitable for CICM, RACP, ANZCA and ACEM candidates. This is a highly structured teaching program for Basic and Advanced trainees. Additionally specific exam practice is offered. Day leave is allowed for all registrars to attend the monthly Victorian Intensive Care network (VICEN) teaching days.

Six enthusiastic Intensive Care Physicians, with experience and qualifications in echocardiography, bronchoscopy, perioperative medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, retrieval medicine, and research support the training program. Amongst them is a CICM Primary examiner and two CICM Fellowship examiner. The Intensivists provide on-site support and supervision of all trainees.

The Northern Hospital is home to the Northern Medical School affiliated to the University of Melbourne. Registrars have ample opportunity to test their undergraduate and graduate teaching skills. The Intensive Care Unit provides extensive opportunity for inter-professional education.

The ICU offers a diverse patient case mix. At the Northern Intensive care an advanced CICM trainee will benefit from becoming competent with managing complex medical patients and extensive exposure to Hepatic, Colorectal and Thoracic surgery. All medical specialities are represented at the Northern. All surgical specialities except Cardiac and Neurosurgery are represented. Since early 2018 the ICU has also been developing a paediatric high dependency capability.

Northern Health is a highly regarded research and teaching facility with a strong commitment to training and has a brand new Teaching and Training Precinct with simulation facilities.

Our current registrars have exposure to:

  • Emergency assessment of Adult, Paediatric and Neonatal patients as part of the MET (Medical Emergency Team).
