About the Parks & Recreational Services Branch

Located within the Lifestyle & Community Directorate, the Parks & Recreational Services Branch is responsible for planning, constructing, maintaining and conserving the Gold Coast’s parks, open spaces and natural areas to enhance recreational and sporting access, active and healthy lifestyles, appreciation of our natural areas and biodiversity conservation.

Within the Branch the Natural Areas Management Unit (NAMU) is responsible for the day to day management and conservation of a 13,000 hectare estate with significant and diverse biological values. The unit protects and enhances the values of conservation reserves that extend from the McPherson Range to Southern Moreton Bay.

About the Position

The position will support the Team Leader Natural Area Assets and Services to deliver and maintain high quality and sustainable built assets that showcase and preserve the City’s natural areas. The assets you build and maintain will support the conservation of the City’s green assets which underpin the Gold Coast’s enviable lifestyle.

The role will assist with the prioritisation, scoping, project management and delivery of capital projects, including nature based recreation opportunities, fire trail maintenance and renewal and other natural hazard mitigations. The position will also contribute to the development and management of multi-year service contracts to help ensure NAMU’s asset management exceeds corporate standards and benchmarks.

Key deliverables of the position:

  • Help deliver priority actions arising from adopted Conservation Reserve Plans of Management and reserve based Bushfire Management Plans for the City’s natural areas estate, and monitor programs to inform adaptive management.
  • Contribute to a motivated team that feel encouraged and supported in their day to day conservation land management work.
  • Prioritise, scope, deliver and monitor NAMU’s capital projects to enhance delivery of nature based recreation opportunities and maintain biodiversity values.
  • Help manage NAMU’s operational and capital budgets and meet/comply with corporate governance timeframes and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development of multiple year services contracts (for eg., fire trail maintenance, vegetation management etc) to ensure NAMU achieves its key deliverables as defined by the PR&S Business Plan, the City’s Operational Plan, Our Natural City Strategy and other key corporate strategies and plans.
  • Help maintain and enhance the Unit’s WHS management system and ensure that staff work safely in remote areas.
  • Prepare Terms of Reference and other scoping documents for quotation kits to procure services and deliver capital works.
  • Prepare business cases, briefing notes etc and Council agenda reports as required
  • Help control, mitigate and monitor actions arising from Corporate and Directorate risks – pest plants and animals, slope instability/rock fall and bushfire in Council owned natural areas.

About You

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in project management and contract development and supervision. In addition, you will possess proven financial and business management skills and enjoy the fact that your business skills will make a positive impact on the successful delivery of NAMU’s key conservation activities. We require a team player with strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. You will have a demonstrated ability to support staff to help ensure that they achieve their goals and gain a sense of accomplishment each day.
