About the Position

On offer is a permanent Assessment Engineer position on a 10-day fortnight.

The role is in Development Services, an internal referral team involved in the assessment of development applications which provides advice on water supply, sewerage and solid waste management.  The team also supervises the construction of developer contributed water supply and sewerage assets including trunk infrastructure.

The Assessment Engineer is responsible for assessing development applications and preparing internal referral memos in accordance with the Planning Act 2016 and assessing connection applications in accordance with the South-East Queensland Water (Distribution and Retail Restructuring) Act 2009.

The following list of responsibilities apply to this position:

  • Assess reconfiguring of a lot, material change use and operational works applications
  • Assess complex development applications involving sewer pumping stations, water pumping stations and vacuum sewer systems
  • Assess development applications involving delivery of trunk infrastructure
  • Manage tender review and construction of developer delivered trunk infrastructure projects
  • Assess build over or near sewer referrals
  • Assess connection applications
  • Attend site inspections including pre-starts and on maintenances
  • Resolve construction issues and work with Construction Inspectors to ensure all site inspections are undertaken
  • Review plan sealing applications and make recommendations to Senior Assessment Engineer and Coordinator
  • Assess as constructed plans and other QA documentation

About You

If you are a qualified engineer and possess the following qualifications, you are encouraged to apply for this interesting and challenging position:

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Civil or Mechanical) or equivalent knowledge
  • Competency in written and verbal communication
  • White Card (or the ability to obtain one)

Working in development assessment is challenging and requires compliance with strict legislative timeframes and assessment rules.  To be effective in this position, you will need to be a strong negotiator and be able to manage changing priorities.  You will also be able to influence others and make engineering decisions in a timely manner with input from Senior Assessment Engineers and Construction Inspectors.

Desirable: In 200 words or less, explain whether you think engineering standards must be followed and why? Also explain what you would do when engineering standards cannot be applied to solve a problem.
Desirable: In 200 words or less, explain how you organise yourself and manage/would manage a combination of office and site based work tasks. Often in the development industry office and site work will be urgent as Council approvals have a significant impact on construction sequencing and timing.
