About City Planning

Located in the Economy Planning and Environment Directorate, the City Planning Branch takes a strategic approach with long-term planning and policy development to manage the growth and development of the City of Gold Coast while protecting and conserving our natural resources and heritage

About the Position

This role is responsible for providing specialist strategic cultural heritage advice, policy and planning to promote good quality outcomes for the city’s heritage – consisting of maintaining the Gold Coast Local Heritage Register, local artefacts, memorabilia, oral histories, digital stories, built heritage and natural environment. The role also provides expert cultural heritage advice for city assets and key strategic projects across all directorates. The role is responsible for leading and coordinating a senior heritage planner with professional expertise in cultural heritage, urban design, landscape architecture, and planning.

Key position responsibilities

  • Coordinate the preparation and review of policies and strategies in relation to cultural heritage, sustainable development, urban design and other development issues, that meet the Corporate objectives
  • Review and amend cultural heritage policies to achieve sustainable outcomes
  • Identify stakeholders for public consultation purposes in regard to individual projects ensuring the needs and expectations of key stakeholders are considered
  • Collaborate with other government authorities in relation to works concerning the City’s cultural heritage, , ensuring impacts on the City’s liveability are considered/identified
  • Conduct research and analysis of planning data to support policy development
  • Provide leadership and specialist cultural heritage advice to Council and clients on matters relating to cultural heritage regarding both local and regional land use planning
  • Provide leadership & advocacy in responding to the City’s land use planning challenges in terms of cultural heritage
  • Provide specialist expertise/advice in the discipline of cultural heritage to meet defined outcomes
  • Provide cultural heritage input into projects and initiatives undertaken by other Directorates or Branches
  • Experience in leading, managing and mentoring resources as part of a high performing team, in line with corporate people management and development frameworks
