Position: The Carer Consultant will provide consultation to Bendigo Health Mental Health Services on aspects of carer involvement in the planning, deliver and evaluation of mental health services in line with Victoria’s Mental Health Reform Priorities and the Principles for Recovery Oriented Health Services.

The consultant also provides advice, support and consultation to carers of mental health services with the aim of improving mental health service delivery by ensuring that consumers and carers have meaningful input into the decision making process at all levels.

The successful applicant will be involved in the professional development of staff related to improving information & support to families and carers accessing the service. The Carer Consultant’s understanding of the needs of families derives from their lived experience. This lived experience knowledge is a vital component of service development for support of families and carers.

The Clinical Operations Division encompasses acute and mental health services with a focus on excellent care, every person, every time.  We provide a wide range of general medical, surgical and speciality services including oncology, cardiology, renal, emergency, women’s and children’s, critical care, specialist clinics and mental health services.


Within a state of the art hospital, the team provides high quality services using the latest technologies.  Our eleven operating theatres (including 2 endoscopy rooms), critical care, emergency and women’s wards all have access to critical services lifts that link to the helipad allowing rapid transfer of patients both in and out of the health service.


The Mental Health Service is a complex service that provides psychiatric care and treatment across a large catchment area in Victoria stretching from Swan Hill in the north of the state to Gisborne in the south. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service provides services to patients from birth to 17 years, the Youth Team covers ages 18 to 24 years, Adult Services cover patients from 25 to 64 years and the Older Person’s Service manages those individuals over 65 years old. 


Each year our onsite specialist clinics provide almost 95,000 occasions of service, we also see more than 52,000 people in our emergency department and welcome around 1400 babies into the world.  The Clinical Operations Division assists with the admission of more than 49,000 patients into the hospital each year.

Selection Criteria
01.Direct personal experience as a family member or carer of a person with a mental illness, and of the public mental health system

02.An understanding of the range of different experiences and perspectives of family/carers when someone has a mental illness and a strong commitment to providing a carer perspective on mental health services

03.An understanding of the regional health and community services system and knowledge of current initiatives and directions regarding families and carers of people with a mental illness

04.Good organisation and time management skills with demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team

05.Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult and liaise with consumers, carers, staff members and other relevant agencies

06.Good computer and literacy skills and experience in maintaining accurate records

07.Work place experience and skill transferable to the health setting or qualifications in a related field would be valued

08.Ability to effectively participate in committees and present education or information to groups of people
